The Idea
Why card counting beats the house
Blackjack is not a game of pure luck. Over millions of hands the casino wins because of a small, fixed house edge - roughly half a percent against a player using perfect basic strategy. Card counting works by turning that fixed edge into a moving one.
The key insight, first proven by mathematician Edward Thorp in Beat the Dealer, is that a deck rich in tens and aces favours the player. When more high cards remain, you are dealt more blackjacks (which pay 3:2), your double-downs land more often, and the dealer busts more frequently on stiff hands. When more low cards remain, the opposite is true and the casino's edge grows.
A card counter does not memorise which cards have been played. Instead you keep a single running number that estimates the ratio of high cards to low cards still to come. When that number climbs, the odds have shifted in your favour - so you bet more. When it falls, you bet the minimum. Do this accurately over hundreds of hours and the math, not luck, decides the result.

Does card counting still work today?
Yes - but the game has changed, and being honest about that is the whole point of this site. Card counting still beats blackjack wherever a real, hand-dealt shoe is dealt deep before the shuffle. What has shrunk is the number of tables where those conditions exist.
Continuous shuffling machines (CSMs)
CSMs feed played cards back into the shoe after every round, so there is never deep penetration to exploit. On a CSM table there is effectively no count to keep - simply avoid them.
Online vs live-dealer
Software blackjack reshuffles every hand, so counting is impossible. Live-dealer streams use real cards but shuffle early, which kills the edge. Counting is a live, in-person, deep-shoe game.
Surveillance and AI
